1. The date on the sign says 8 - 14 - 45. The bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki a week earlier. I guess the fighting stopped by mid August. The Japanese eventually signed the surrender on the deck of the battleship Missouri in Toyko bay on September 2, 1945. So Sept 2nd actually became VJ day. There are some pictures of Alexai Point else where on this site. I'm beginning to think dad's unit must have been based on the point. The only name I can recognize is the third one under Tom Nolan's, on the left side. It says: V Lopatynski, who is pictured elsewhere in this and another gallery. Other names listed here are: Porky Comparette, Mac McCutcheon, Dick Gurley, Pancho Sanchez (middle guy, left side pointing at his name), J____ Johnson, ____ Halloran, Tom Urton, Bill Allen, Tojo Juola (or Judla), Bo Kalisek, Jeems Morris, Wilbur Newberry, and Capt Lynch.
