Hal Fisher, Sue Harris and I took this project on in 1996, with the help of Turner Publishing, then in Paducah, now in Nashville. I worked with old friends Hal and Sue, with David Figge of Turner Publishing leading us through the project: announcements in the local paper, requests for old photos, writing articles, selling page and half-page advertisements, etc. The number of pages we were allowed depended upon the amount of money collected for the paid ads and the number of pre-paid orders for the book. In the copy of the contract I still have, a book would have 160 pages if 950 copies were pre-sold. Our book had 196 pages (and almost 500 photos) so I guess we pre-sold about 1,100 or so copies at $32.50 each. Turner Company probably printed a few more than were ordered, and I remember I bought about 40 extra copies for me to sell after production. Turner suggested the post-production cost should be $37.50 for those wanting a book who did not pre-order one, but Hal and I agreed we would sell them for $40. I sold all my copies and made a little money on the deal, but what I remember most is my pride at being part of the team with Sue and Hal. All extra copies were sold out within weeks of completion and there were many folks who wanted to buy a copy, when we had no more to offer. On amazon.com I have seen a copy for $59.95, and on ebay for $69.30. I guess I should have held back a few copies 20 years ago to sell today!
