1. When all the Marine helicopter units were pulled out of Vietnam in May and June of 1971, the UH-1s, Cobras and OV-10s moved up to MCAS Futema on Okinawa where I was stationed. Before they arrived, all the pilots were getting all the flight time they wanted. I guess we flew pretty much every day. After they arrived, we had about 60 Lieutenants in the Squadron and NO ONE was getting much flight time. By August the bosses were asking who would like to be re-assigned to Wing HQ in Japan, at MCAS Iwakuni. Since we were getting all kinds of lousy assignments to keep us busy (instead of flying), and also since I had pretty much seen all there was to see on Okinawa, by air and by motorcycle, I volunteered to head north.
